Let's remember to visit St. Lawrence County-owned stores while holiday shopping

Now that holiday shopping season is full swing, let’s plan to remember to support our friends and neighbors who operate many of St. Lawrence County’s smaller stores and specialty shops.

The St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce last week issued a reminder to “shop locally,” offering a number of suggested shopping destinations.

Sure, the nationwide retailers and on-line merchants may provide more extended shopping hours and sometimes lower prices.

But the profit they earn leaves our area, instead of staying in the county and multiplying several times.

Plus, you can’t find hand-crafted items made in the North Country at the “big boxes.”

Happy shopping!

YES THE SMALLER STORE HAVE NICE THINGS,BUT SOME OF US LIVE ON SOCIAL SECURITY OR OTHER FORMS OF DISABILITY AND CAN NOT AFFORD THINGS IN THOSE STORE.WE HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN BUYING ITEMS FROM THESE MERCHANTS AT THERE HIGHER COST AND GO WITH OUT PAYING A BILL SUCH AS HEAT OR FOOD, OR GOING TO THE BIGGER STORES TO PAY LESS SO WE CAN ALSO PAY OUR BILLS.IN OUR HOME IT DOESNT MATTER AS WE WONT BE HAVING A CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR,MY HUSBAND AND i ARE BOTH DISABLED AND LIVE ON THE FIXED VERY LOW INCOME,HAVE 2 MORTGAGES JUST ON THE HOUSE WE LIVE IN,THEN THERE IS THE REST OF THE MONTHLY BILLS,NOT INCLUDING MEDICATIONS THAT RUN THE 2 OF US OVER 100.00 A MONTH JUST IN CO PAYMENTS.SORRY LITTLE STORES BUT THE WORKING PEOPLE WITH THE HIGH INCOME WILL HAVE TO SHOP THERE ,BECAUSE WE THAT LIVE BELOW POVERTY LEVEL JUST CAN NOT AFFORD IT.

I think it is such a common misconeption that small stores are more expensive. Some are, yes- some are not. Black Friday I went to four "small" shops in Potsdam and bought chocolate for stockings, a handmade jewelry box (paper) only $11! I also bought 2 craft items at Misty Hollow (less than $20 for both) and bought a DVD at Northern Music & Video which was the same price ($1 more ) than WalMart- I received fantastic customer service and I felt good about the purchases. I also went to WalMart and everything was so picked over that I couldn't have found what I wanted unless I was there at 5am and who wants to do that? Our local stores are fantastic treasures.

I agree with the last post- try going to a big store and get good customer service- Karen at Misty Hollow found fabric when Walmart didn't include it- Big M will order special food for you- try that at a big store, The coop is also fantastic! Shop local and support local businesses they are the backbone of our local economi.

Walmart employs more people than all of these small shops combined.

The store brings people into Potsdam to shop (who would not have otherwise come) and maybe go to lunch or shop at a specialty store.

You folks are out of your tree with your hatred towards Walmart. They spike the local economy not hurt it, BOZOS!

I do a little of both- I shop at WalMart for things I can't find downtown and try to buy gifts & such at smaller shops.

I shopped at a beautiful small shop over in Waddington called Artworks Gallery. They carry all locally hand-crafted items like jewelry, baskets, blown-glass...great gifts and affordable. Here, you are not only supporting the local shop, but also the many craftspeople who make the items.
