Should NCNow post photos of animals killed by hunters?

Today’s photo of a bloody, partially gutted bear shot with a bow-and-arrow in South Colton prompted strong objections from several viewers.

“That is a pretty tasteless photo of a dead bloody bear on the front page. After a few days of nice pictures of Moose (ALIVE) in the area, you show this??” e-mailed one person.

Said another, “You have had many nice photos greeting readers on your home page in the past, but I find the hanging, gutted bear photo very disturbing.”

And a third person said they would stop using NorthCountryNow.com as their home page: “My internet browser has been set up to open with NorthCountryNow.com as homepage. The daily continuous local news updates, and the local pictures have been enjoyable. However, the sight of the partially degutted black bear corpse, slaughtered for no apparent reason but the joy of killing, as well as earlier photos of children with hunted pheasants, dead turkeys and fish has made me leery of what images will assault my sight next. NorthCountryNow.com will be retired to bookmark status on my computer.”

For the many hunters in St. Lawrence County, pictures such as today’s can be interesting and exciting.

But for many others, they are revolting.

Do you think NorthCountryNow.com should post photos of animals killed by hunters? Share your opinions with us by posting a comment.

I agree with the opinion that pictures of dead animals and the people who are proud of slaughtering them are tasteless and revolting.

This is "North Country Now" ... not "NYC Now." Hunting and fishing is part of north country culture ... fact fishing (carp) has become a major tourist attraction.

If you don't like what's on tv change the channel ... if you don't like the picture, go to another page or perhaps have a section dedicated to "outdoor living" that has a disclaimer ... "wimps stay away"

I don't think it is tasteless or revolting. It is a simple fact, and has been for a long time, that people hunt animals, kill them, and eat them. It is a sport. I haven't hunted in 10 years but I see nothing wrong with posting pictures of it and don't have any problem with signing my name to this comment either.

Dead Animals aren'y my favorite thing, but Hunters have just as much right to post a picture as I do. This is northern NY, You can not change its heritage.

Anonymous said...

I understand hunting, fishing, etc. occurs in the north country, but these are photos that do not please a portion of the citizens in the north country. Some find it disturbing, while others find it rewarding. Hunting is a very controversial topic so I think to avoid heated arguments such as this that NCN should avoid posting such photos. Maybe creating a link for these photos for those that choose to view them would be a good idea, but not on the homepage.

yes sometime pictures can be revolting to some! but as a hunter myself I like to see other hunters have gotten,Maybe the should just head line the title then have to click on it too see it ?? for those who think meat still comes from the grocery store !!!

Anonymous said...

I must admit I was surprised by it, but not revolted. The photos are up for a day at most, so anyone offended need wait a day at most for them to change. I don't see any reason to change the policy on photos.

Hunting is part of the culture here. I am proud to see a picture like this.

I disagree with all the complaining, if you dont see a dead animal on here, then take a ride in your car, dead animals all over the place. I dont see anyone complaining about that. And im sure that everyone that does complain doesnt eat any sort of meat either, okkkkkayyy.

Anonymous said...

No, it is not revolting. It is a part of who we are, and if you dont like it dont look, or even better go back to the city and eat your veggie burger

Anonymous said...

hard to believe people would rather have articles of death and rape and all the other terrible stuff out there on the front page.they didnt complain when klages was on the front page.we live in northern ny its our way of life and you cant please everybody so just keep the good work.

I understand that there are many hunters in this rural area, and as this is still America, they have that right. I, however, am not one of them, nor are members of my family. It is one thing to kill animals because your family will starve, or they are threatening your livestock/livelihood. However, to just go out and kill an animal for sport first, and food second is just appalling to me. If hunters wish to share photos, perhaps a separate page for them would be best, especially to protect young children who may not be able to avoid these pictures. We used to have neighbors who, during hunting season, would hang their dead deer in the front yard - very close to the road - right on the corner where the school bus turned several times a day. THAT was certainly in poor taste....

Anonymous said...

I feel sorry for the poor bear I am sure he would like to have lived a little while longer.

norwaynancy said...

I think this should be in the sporting section. The blood and guts hanging out are a little much for the front page.

I would like to see a daily report of the car/deer accidents!
They only way I hear about them is word of mouth.
I would be more cautious in the areas where there are accidents.

Anybody else out there like to have this kind of information?

Anonymous said...

I will only return to NCNow when there is a picture of a hunter gutted and hanging from a tree. Killing animals is ludicrous, but posting pictures of it is irresponsible journalism.

Bob Merrifield said...

I find it hilarious and it sure speaks volumes that those who wanted to complain did it anonymously. If you have the stones to type it, have the stones to leave your name. Are you worried the hunters will track you down or something stupid like that? I am a hunter and I did not find the picture appalling disgusting or revolting. I have never seen a complaint when a nice fish is displayed. Umm news flash the fish died too.

Our hunting seasons are sanctioned by New York State for sport and controlling the animal population. If it wasn't for hunters you would be hard pressed to drive through most areas without having an accident due to these animals or for goodness sake they would devour your gardens! Ask any farmer what a nusance these animals can be with their crops. To say the least the revenue hunting generates for the state of NY and most of these small towns is most welcome. This sport brings in millions of dollars at a time of the year we can all use the business. The word "slaughter" is used when they butcher your beef & pork. So you may want to become a vegetarian because the next time you purchase your meat at the grocers, YOU are now tasteless and revolting!!!

I'm wondering what will be done with the Bear skin! It's beautiful! :0)

Personally have no problem with hunting & fishing pics! :0)

I like to see that a bear in my area has been killed, instead of the bear killing my pets or my neighbor's livestock! :0)

Anonymous said...

OK, wake up New York. Those that take offense to this photo need not watch the news tonight where you will see our young soldiers gettting "slaughtered" and our children raped & abused. Since you seem to have an abundant amount of energy to complain about a wild animal, note "WILD", you should apply this energy in protecting our young, our elderly & our country.
I'm sure if this same animal had mauled a camper this summer, the same folks crying "inhumane" would have been asking for our DEC to better mangage our forests! This young man did what he was suppose to do and did it legally and I'm sure will feed his family this winter. Any of you thought of HIS savings at the grocery store? C'mon say it..you are jealous!!!!

Anonymous said...

No. I don't want to see them. Neither do my nephews and nieces, one of whom recently watched my PC navigate to my Home Page, NCNow, whilc I got coffee, comfortable in the fact that NCNow was a more or less family magazine with taste.
As I came in the room, coffee cup in hand, he pointed at the screen and said "Did they cut his thingie off because they hung him? He looks hung. Look." and he pointed at the bloody opening.

I was pretty disappointed in NCNow for being what I consider uncharastically graphic. Actually, sitting back and thinking about it after my nephew was done surfing, and here are the thoughts I ended up with:
-- No one has a "right" to have any particular comment or photograph placed on NCNow. So the blame goes to NCNow, not to the proud hunter. But, it's not that simple.
-- NCNow owns the equipment, the software, the intellectual rights of the site design, its own copyrights and trademarks, etc., and may choose what they wish to publish or not publish. Thus, the actual "blame" comes back on myslef for having trusted NCNow to be a "safe" place for a young child to view for the minute or so I was gone. I don't know yet whether I'll just remove NCNow as my Home Page or whether I'll simply never again allow my nieces and nephews to start IE on their own, period. Since the latter is necessary no matter how I look at it, that only leaves me to figure out whether I might not prefer a different Home Page for my local news and interests.

I used to hunt. Never enjoyed it all that much to be honest, other than the excuse for a bunch of comraderie with a few other similarly armed friends. I ended up selling my guns, all but a .22 for varmint control, which I've needed only one time for an apparently rabid skunk.

But I do not think that NCNow is the place for proud hunters to be displaying their prizes. In fact, over the last decade or so I've come to believe that hunting causes a lot more cruelty to the animals than any pride or display of the hunt can even begin to make up for.
A few hunters do actually eat their kills, but in my experience, the majority of the ones I know do NOT. Eating a kill is a good way to get good and sick too, if you don't know what you're doing. And the taste can leave an awful lot to be desired. Usually such "food" has to be cooked to almost beyond recognition before it's even palatable anyway.

There are lots of places hunters can send their picture to and show off their kills. I sincerely think NCNow makes a huge mistake in displaying such carnage. Yes, carnage; to the uninitiated, that's what it often is. To the animal lover, that's waht it is.
No one kills an animal because they "need" to eat it. Meat at the store is a lot cheaper when all is said & done.

So do me and others like me a favor and stop hyping the hunting of animals and even fish. Too many people believe the myths that animals and fish in particular don't feel pain and so it's all right if they shoot something and it gets away.

NCNow is a great source of local news and events and all kinds of sources for that news. I really like the way so many different sources are collected all in one place like you do and you even give one of my web sites some great PR in the listings. I could give you a long specific list of what I like about the site, but like most things, it only takes one seriously offensive move to undo hundreds, maybe thousands of good moves and it's even harder to regain the loyalty of the lost visitors.

Thanks for listening; I am quite serious in the remarks I have made.

On top of the other comments, have your young child stand along side you to show off your trophy. I wonder where the guy's priorities are....... if he has any !!

I am an avid hunter myself.

I see nothing wrong with posting photos but some descretion should be given as to how they are to be viewed.

In this case, maybe if the bear was laying on the ground with the hunter kneeling behind it so where it was field dressed out would have been in better taste.

Anonymous said...

What is it illegal to hunt now too?

Anonymous said...

I can't see the "pride" in displaying a dead, bloody animal here....disturbing to me that the dad should think it nessesary to include his daughter in the pic...very disturbing.

Charlie Swartz said...

.....to where it was field dressed out would not be showing .....

Anonymous said...

No. There is no pleasure for me in viewing a photo of a dead animal, especially one as graphic as the last one.

KUDOS to NCNow for even bothering to ask this question of its audience. Whether I end up keeping you as a home page or not, it is certainly a good thing to have done.

Thanks

Nimrod said...

Bring 'em on. The more the merrier, and the bloodier the better. Sportive killing is a vital part of North Kountry Kultur, after all. Let's flaunt it.

Paul said...

I was an avid hunter for over 20 years when I gave it up simply because I did not enjoy killing animals. While I do not begrudge anyone that does enjoy hunting I think that posting a picture of a carcass of what used to be a living creature a little too much. The comment about not liking the photo then turn the page, is a little difficult when it pops up on the 19" monitor right in front of you. Too little too late I guess. We do not need to see the pictures, North Country or not.

Anonymous said...

It's offensive. I also think it could be traumatizing to kids who don't normally see animal photos like this.
To those that say that we don't complain about rape and murder stories? I'd complain if NC Now had photos on the home page- Thanks...

Anonymous said...

I'm not a hunter but, I know many wonderful, fine people who are. Upstanding citizens. Everyone of them.

I don't see anything wrong with it except maybe, as someone else has pointed out, the picture could have been with the bear on the ground.

But, if you are worried about some children you'd still have explain to some little ones what yogi was doing there, on the ground. But, so what. It is our jobs as adults sometimes to have to deal with some subjects that we aren't "comfortable" in dealing with it comes to explaining them to children. It is a real world out there folks.

As far as his little girl being there. She looked pretty happy to me. There's nothing wrong with teaching your children about responsible hunting. If it is not your thing then don't but, don't put anyone else down who does.

Maybe they like bear meat and maybe it will help feed his family this winter. It is better than holding out your hand and expecting everyone else to feed you.

Anonymous said...

Not a huge fan of the photo, but understand that this is the North Country. Would also rather have the choice to ''click'' on the picture. I have enjoyed the happiness in seeing the moose .So much to my surprise to open the news and see that I was a bit mortified.

Anonymous said...

This is supposed to be a free country but yet people want to complain about a picture come on find something better to do with your time im glad this man got a bear it will save his family and him some much needed money when it comes to feeding his family.

Anonymous said...

I was so glad to see that people have spoken out about this picture. I couldnt believe my eyes. It to me was in very poor taste as no one should take such pleasure in killing an animal. I felt bad for the bear. No animal should be harmed unless its to protect your life.

Anonymous said...

are you's serious? people object to that but yet its a free for all when somebody mentions the reservation? get a fricken life....honestly. theres more in life than petty b.s. like this

Anonymous said...

I personally know this young man and his family and let me be the first to say to those who do not know him:
1. Yes he will eat all of this meat and notably take care of the fur.
2. His daughter is being taught many positive aspects of hunting and animal management. His priorities are in check! By the way, his daughter did NOT ask where his "thingy was", she is smarter & more mature than that!
3. By following the guidelines of the DEC he has supplied an abundance of information for wildlife management.
4. He also knows how to cook his game so it is very tasty as 99.9% of hunters do. Those that don't, such as the previous blogger, should not be hunting and we thank you for staying out of our woods!
Stop being so critical of this noble hunter and pay more attention to what your kids watch on TV or their gaming devices. Have you not noticed how much blood, gore & violence they are exposed to on these video games whre they get to shoot policeman & hookers? What you all should be doing is getting off the couch and start spending time with your kids, like this man does and teach them about our great outdoors and throw out the TV,cellphones & gameboys!
They say ignorance is bliss, those complaining must be very happy!

Brian said...

Welcome to the North Country. If you don't like it go away. I seem to recall people on this site complaining that wildlife was come down from the hills and invading some areas that they haven't been seen much before. This is part of taking care of the problem and is the conservation of wildlife. Props to this man for putting food on his table and teaching this youngster a thing or two about the outdoors.

I think that people should seriously just grow-up. I've lived in the North Country my whole life. This IS one of the reasons why I love the North Country. We don't live in the city, and if people expect that, then they should go to the City. I'm so sick of people in this area that act like that. To the owner of this picture, it's a great picture, and your daughter is adorable. I have three daughters and they love to get their picture taken with their daddy when he gets a deer. We have never gotten a bear, but it's great to look at the picture. Congrats!!! :-) Don't let snobby people get you down. And NCTW, you're doing a great job, you will always be my homepage on my 2 computers at home, and my work computer as well! Keep up the good work!

Having this photo or any other gruesome pictures like this on the front page or any other page is complete caveman-like behavior. What was the point of having this on here? I could see maybe having a picture of a little kid who just caught his first fish (for dinner) on here, but not this monstracity. Do people realize how much MEAT goes to waste each day? Yet, some find a need to kill one more of the beautiful sites in the North Country. If Al Sismer, and any other person who worships this waste of life wants to make their own link-- be my guest, but in the meantime leave this stuff out. Thanks

Ben said...

I agree with Bob Merrifield, indeed people have some stones and type your name. Better yet open your freezers and look in your closets. I find it hilarious that anyone can say that they oppose the killing of animals, but yet they can still wear a leather belt to work, or toss a steak on the grill. HYPOCRITES.

Anonymous said...

Since we hunters are a minority in this country I think we need to always be aware of the public relations aspect of our sport. I'm sure that the man in the photo didn't intend to upset anyone and was rightfully proud of this trophy. However, it would have been much better to arrange the picture to show respect for the animal.

Deb Nicholson said...

Utterly sickening, keep those photos for your personal photo album!!! Hunters are proud of killing and justify their reasons. Those of us who despise any sort of cruelty would appreciate NCN to not stick them on the front page. How disgusting to open my home page (living abroad in New Zealand) and see the death of a poor animal!! Please use better judgment.

Anonymous said...

now come on!! for decades photos in local newspapers have been posted of people showing off deer, bears, turkey and other animals killed while hunting. THIS ISNT NEW YORK CITY NOW. maybe you people outside upstate new york -- or animal rights lovers have nothing better to do but complain about hunting photos. where would you get your food? or are you killing innocent plants to eat on your tables every day?? its a way of life in upstate new york for those who hunt and bring home food for others. the hunters pay a good price to get game.

Anonymous said...

this silly maybe it should of been shot by a DEC officer like the one in Lowville ,,,at least it will not go to waste ,,,,good for the hunter who shot it shame on the people who put him down

Anonymous said...

The photo is fine. If it was of a car wreck , would that be better? If someone finds it offensive, then move on to another page. The variety of photos used by NCN is good, and this one is different from all the sunsets and nature scenes. It is part of the rural culture we all live in.
Everybody , would you just be a little more accepting of differences between us?

Anonymous said...

of course they should post these pictures...hunting if a very huge sport here in the north country hence northcountrynow i visit this site daily hoping to see photos of animals or sunsets or anything along the line of being outdoors..if you disagree go to a different site no ones making u come here and if you stop using its not going to matter..and as for wanting to put us hunters in are own category is very unfair but it also could work there would be plenty more pictures and as a hunter myself i enjoy seeing other peoples takes during hunting season...thanks for reading all.

The picture of the bear is bad enough; to include the child who is supposedly "proud" of her father's accomplishment is hideous, outrageous and offensive. Exactly what is this child proud of? that her father's bullet was faster than the bear?

Anonymous said...

I didn't know you could shoot bullets with a bow. Man...he really is good!

Anonymous said...

What, so in the area we live, the North Country of New York... you can't show a picture of happy people. For some people a live moose is a happy picture. For others, a dead bear is a happy picture. You don't hear objections when they post pictures of people with fish... I guess I just don't get people...

Anonymous said...

There are many types of people that view this web site. Perhaps pictures of killed animals with the blood showing is not the best thing to put on this site. I realize that hunting is a way of life in this area and I'm in the minority but maybe a seperate site/folder could be set up for these pictures.

Anonymous said...

Absolutely NOT. It is disgusting, especially with a cute little girl standing next to the bloody bear!!!

Anonymous said...

I'd be proud of that bear too. What's the difference between going to the grocery store to buy meat or going out and killing it yourself? For the people that think hunting is just for the thrill of killing an animal have a lot to learn about hunting. As for his daughter being in the picture, I once saw a bumper sticker that explains it all. "Kids that are hunting, fishing and trapping aren't out robbing little old ladies"

Anonymous said...

For tjose that find that pictire gruesome, bloddy, revolting, and may some how "harm" our youngsters...you must get a reality check. This is the same blood and red meat you & your kids see in the P&C, Walmart, etc. I jave yet to see a child or family go screaming out of the grocers when they went to the meat section. I find it rather entertaining to hear these stupid and ignorant remarks from the meat eating, leather wearing video games playing idiots on this blog.

Tom Wheland said...

This is just another classic example of the "MINORITY" trying to get there way in this country by complaining. Like when these low lifes got there way by taking the Pledge Of Allegience out of our schools. Hunters have just as much right to have there pictures on here as anyone else. Certain people need to grow up and get a life. Hunting is perfectly legal and has been around since the beginning of time. The person that said all there buddies never eat there harvest well I guess that says it all about them and there hunting buddies! And the comment about after it is all done and said it is cheaper to buy it let me know where you shop buddy I'll be the first in line there what a crock! Congrats to NCN for posting the picture. Obviously most of the whiners were to ashamed to post there names given how foolish some of these comments were. Again hunters have just as much right to have there pictures on here as anyone else.

Anonymous said...

I can understand why some people would take offense to that picture, but me personally, I don't care. I normally just glance at pictures & move on to the content & links.

If the people who want to complain & whine about that sort of picture, then they need to take their tea & crumpets & get the hell out of the North Country. There are hunters here who enjoy seeing what others have gamed, just like there are people who enjoy showing off their gardens, or snap shots of the beautiful area we live in.

Basically, if you don't like it, deal with it. There's pictures of other things posted that I'm sure those hunters just ignore too.

I have lived here in the north country and hunted here all of my adult life. I think the pictures of dead animals should be relagated to a special section of your newspaper. having a dead bear wuith smiling hunters faces is a little much for the front page. Not something i want to see while i'm drinking my morning coffee.

I visit NCNow daily, more than once. I never find anything that is revolting. Photos or in the news articles. It's a part of everyday life. It's no different than reading the newspaper, or watching the news on TV. Just think of what they could really show. Come on!

If you can't stand the thought of your little girl, or little boy seeing this mayhem...then like tv.....change the D**N channel...why is it ok if it's somebody elses kids fighting for your freedom anf bleeding out, ...just get over it people...it happened and if it happens again hooray...it is not an every day occurance like all you dummies driving around with your cellphone stuck to your ear...lets talk about that...keep the hunting success stories coming...I love it...Mark.

"wimps stay away" that's a good title, i do agree with most of the people on here. Yes hunting and fishing and trapping are all part of the lively-hood in the north country but for us that don't enjoy the hunting fishing and trapping, i think we shouldn't have to witness it or the picture's of it, when we open up the website. If people do want to continue to post these trophies of their "kill's" then yes they should have their own section on here, where not everyone has to view the picture's. I have people in my family that do trap, fish and hunt, yes they are my family and i love them but i DO NOT want to see these revolting disgusting picture's. Everyone make's a big deal when someone hit's a deer with their car and leave's it on the side of the road for all others to witness, now let me ask everyone this....what is the difference??????

I find your posting of pictures of dead animals along with a human with a perpetual idiotic grin on his/her face as tasteless, tacky and revolting. Your website used to post great pictures of our beautiful nature in the north country, but this is not beautiful. It is senseless and cruel. Also, do these men think they are real "men" when they do this? No, they are not - they are armed with ammo up to their eyeballs and after a poor animal with very little defense. I don't call that a man, I call that a wussy, wimp. Bring back the pictures of our children winning awards, and our natural beauty in the north country, not this senseless crap.

These animals are hunted on the lands and eaten at many north country homes. Lets makes everyone happy and have a north country now hunting, trapping, fishing photo album. and from now on just post animals that are alive on the home page.

for the record i find it very very offensive that someone would refer to our heritage as "slaughtering for the joy of killing"

Hunters use your heads, that is a very nice picture of the bear but lets post pictures prior to hanging or dressing. Its more appealing to the "majority"

Anonymous said...

Dear blogger that remarked about the "big ole he man", bagging a big ole bear....is this the first time you have read a newspaper? This "beautiful area" has had countless drug busts, old & young women getting raped, homes getting broke into, factories shutting down, towns without enough money to repair & maintain roads and crime at an all time high which is reported everyday. This type of news would discourage someone from coming here long before a picture of dead bear!!! Pull your head out of whatever body part it is in and realize you & your kids see worse on the bus & on TV than a simple photo!

Anonymous said...

I find it interesting that many are saying "This is the North Country and we hunt". Well, I live here and I don't hunt and most people I know don't either. I am not a radical animal rights activist but I also hate the idea of hunting. I don't judge those who do, I just don't like it and I don't get it. Therefore, I was absolutely appalled when I logged into NCNow.com and saw that picture. It made me absolutely sick to my stomach.

For those who say, its life, people hunt all the time, look in your fridge you'll see dead animals in the form of beef and chicken. Well, if I use your logic, it would be ok to put a picture of a man/woman's private parts on NCNow.com too - we all have them, we see them every day, why shouldn't we be allowed to post them in the newspaper? Some things just aren't meant to be publicized like this pic is.

There is nothing wrong with hunting, but what is the point of showing a bloody animal on the front page. What is exciting about it for anyone other than the people who are in the photo. I'm sure there were more "family friendly" pictures that could have been on the home page. This one could have been in the picture section so those who wanted to see it still could.

People in the north country may be proud of hunting and killing innocent animals, like our very late (and uneducated) ancestors before us, but I'm pretty sure that there are a lot of people here who choose not to hunt, kill, or even eat animals. Just because a group of people are proud to stand by their beliefs does it make it right to publish them? Do we publish things from KKK and things from other VIOLENT groups of people? There is a large percentage of people who find this very offensive and choose not to live this type of lifestyle, or have their children exposed to such graphic nature.

WE NEED TO STOP USING THE REDNECK CARD! JUST B/C WE LIVE IN THE NORTH COUNTRY DOESN'T MEAN WE HAVE TO ACT OR LIVE A CERTAIN WAY!!

Anonymous said...

NCNow should post pictures of there animals killed by hunters because I think the hunters feel pretty proud of what they just have did and done. I think it is right for this to be put up on the home page.

Anonymous said...

A little discretion would have gone a long way when posting this picture.
A bear laying on the ground
with the hunter(s)beside it is acceptable. But I must admit this would be a bit graphic and upsetting to some viewers and should not be posted on the home page.
I don't see much dignity for the bear either do you?

Anonymous said...

I see that some viewers maybe upset that this is up on the home page but still he still has a right to post his game up on the page. WHo is gonna stop him from putting this there. this is the north country!!!

Anonymous said...

I feel that there are many people that do not apperciate these photos have a right their opinion, but as well do the hunters that enjoy this sport. North country now is for the whole north country to enjoy, and I don't see where stopping these photos/stories is hardly fair. If NCN is to stop posting these photos/stories then this site should no longer be called NCN because it is not covering the whole north country like it does now. Hunters enjoy what they do for their choice of sport and have a right to show off their hobby just like other people have a right to show off theirs.

My family is very much into the sport of hunting and enjoy it very much. We all look forward to hunting season and gather at my father in laws house every sunday. All the men gather together and hunt all day, and all us women sit in the warm house and make sure there is coffee for the men when they come in for a rest, and bake and make a nice dinner. All the children in our family learn at a young age about gun safety, and the rules of the woods. Then when the children of our family become the legal age they take their hunters safety course. When any of the men get a deer or whatever then the children also learn the correct way to clean the dear. To me I think the ALL the people in north country should be able to show off their favorite things to do as well as anyone else can. I see nothing wrong with the picture yes to some it may be gorry but thats when you need to scroll down the page faster then.

Congrats to the man in the picture for your awsome kill. And I wish you good hunting.

Here's the problem with many of these posts, "*I* don't like it, take it away."

THAT'S the problem, those who don't like something and decide they are right and it should be taken away for EVERYBODY.

Not just this picture, many things. We have somehow shifted to catering to vocal minorities. "Oh gosh no! A couple of people complained, we must be 'correct' and do something."

I don't hunt or fish, but respect those that find it both enjoyable and sport. I won't take away something those folks enjoy (even a picture) because, one day, I hope they might respect something I enjoy even if they don't.

The picture of NCNow changes daily. Come back when it suits your delicate sensibilities.

I now live away from the North Country but have NCN as my home page because I like to keep up with what is happening in the North Country which I hope to someday call home again. This picture and the many nasty comments from individuals reminded me of what I did not like about the North Country.
Yes I will post anonymous because I still recall the shot guns and individuals who's mindsets were "My way or the highway".

I LIVE IN NORTH CAROLINA NOW BUT AM FROM NORTHERN NEW YORK. HUNTING AND FISHING ARE PART OF THE WAY OF LIFE THERE AND IN MOST RURAL AREAS OF THE COUNTRY. MOST HUNTERS HUNT TO SUPPLEMENT THEIR FOOD SUPPLY NOT TO "MURDER" ANIMALS. THEY ARE PROUD OF THEIR HUNTING SKILLS AND SHOULD BE ACKNOWLEDGED. LEAVE THE PICTURES ALONE.

I think its interesting to see pictures of the animals that hunters have harvested. Here in St. Lawrence County this is everyday life. There are no malls, big cities, or attractions. The outdoors are our life and hunting is what people do. Post more pictures, i enjoy them!!

I almost got sick looking at the bloody bear and the proud killers.
This is the first comment I have ever posted, by the way.

I see no problem with this picture. The bear was not killed for no reason at all it is a sport just like any other sport. I do recall a picture of a young lad with his first fish on here this summer and do not remember any problems with that, what is the difference between fish or bear. It;s a sport and if you don't like it don't look at it! I would be proud of that picture. There are a lot worse things on this internet then a proud hunter with his daughter!!

What a joke!!! There is nothing tasteless about this picture. The complaining is just another way of people trying to taint something they don't understand. That fact that there is even an article on this is a joke, North Country now, do not listen to these idiots, keep up the good work

I am a proud wife of a average hunter. My whole family hunts. NOT for the fun of it, not just to kill. WE put that meat in our freezer to help FEED us . There is nothing wrong with people who hunt to support the family. Look at the farmers.... Are you people going to attack them next? they raise livestock and put it in our meat departments. do those type of animals not count?

Anonymous said...

This should be removed from the website as soon as possible. I don't need to look at dead animals when I am looking at the news!

Anonymous said...

when you go to the market do you chose how to have your meat cut from the other side of the doors? when you walk by the meat department do you see the meat through the window getting processed right in front of your very eyes? WTF is the differents people ? people fish the fish die and people eat the fish, farmers raise chickens, cows, pigs and they are killed and we eat them . maybe you all shouldn't open a newspaper or turn on the tv you may see all those ppl in the war laying there dead on tv!

Anonymous said...

I think it's tasteless to put photos like that on the front page. You don't give us the option of not seeing them. If you want to show anything like that, it should be off a hyperlink that contains a warning of a graphic image.

Quite honestly, a think a criminal charge of assault could be made against you, as well as civil actions. Stop this behavior; it's uncalled for, and un-neighborly.

I must admit, I was pretty shocked to see this photo too! I look forward to seeing the different animals someone finds in their backyard or out walking. This was just out of the water. I was thinking how could someone do this to an animal and be proud of it? I also thought killing bears were illegal but then again I don't know much about that part. I understand people like to hunt but geez show some respect for these deceased beloved animals!

You are seriously screwed up.Would you rather he sign up for food stamps??Hunting adds to the ecomony with sales tax paid on purchases to enjoy the outdoors.Want to complain about something why don't you pay attention to what the liberal IDIOTS are doing in DC to destroy this country.Oh sorry my mistake you are one of the Idiots..

This evening I happen to be standing behind two ladies in the check out isle at one of the local stores. they were discussing how awful it was that the people up here hunting bears, and the picture in NCN was disgusting. One made reference to hunting bears as not being sporting. the other agreed and conversation drifted to other things. the conversation drifted to one of them being in Saratoga for a week at the races. "Now thats a sport" she said. Now that left me thinking, a man who has the skill to locate, track and then harvest a black bear is engaging in a disgusting act.Yet take a man who makes a horse run 1 1/8 miles pushing the animal till it lathers and then beats him with a riding crop(a rod of stiff fiberglass with a thin wrapping of leather) for the last 1/4 mile it becomes an acceptable sport? I guess what I am saying is that everyone has an opinion of what should be or shouldnt be done, but as the saying goes, "dont throw stones if you live in a glass house" so, throw away your gucci leather bags, your north face coats as they contain goose down and dont eat meat because the cows ARE slaughtered.By the way, I do hunt on occassion and think that the young man harvested a fine looking bear, gutted and all.

In the spirit of community it is always appropriate to celebrate success, and this hunter photo is celebrating an apparent legal action (assuming he had the correct license, etc). However NCNow could also use sensible judgment to not show the HANGING motif, with the guts spewing out. There is a reason why we all don't go to the local slaughterhouse to watch the processing or even pick up our meat - and a little less violence isn't a bad thing in any case. Perhaps a compromise of an on-line link to the photo with disclaimer, or a "hunter page" for all those that need to see the whole story. If NCNow sets a standard for accepting for posting more tasteful or bloodless poses, then everyone can be satisfied with the outcomes, and we can gain from the diversity of opinions that represent this issue.

after years of reading north country now, i firmly believe that they will print anything, especially letters to the editor or sound off letters purposely to get controversy started, and i am sure that is why they published this picture, i think pictures like this are revolting, i would much rather look at this bear before he was killed, this is just in bad taste and grossssss

Anonymous said...

You have to be kidding me! Second nice bear you shot Joey. But whoever started this you really have more issue then you think. Boy Ted Nugent would have a hay day with this. As a Iraq veteran and I always have to mention this because of dealing with stupid people that think they have nothing better to do then to cry about stupid stuff like this. There are worst things going in this world then someone shooting a bear and putting a picture of it on here. Hunting has been around since the Native Americans and pilgrims have been around and will be for many more years never going to go away. And any hunter the hunts around here eats everything they shoot or they donate to the needy. I'am advid hunter myself and there's nothing like the kill. And I take my son with me every chance I get he's been in the woods with me since the day he could walk. And I cut deer up and he's been there for all of it. If you dont like it go to another news site. You people who are complaining are really starting to irrate me. You who are complaing like one guy said on here are all liberals and it discusting. Worry about jobs in the north country have to put food on the table some how. Get life.

I don't agree with posting pictures of slaughtered wildlife on the pages of NorthCountryNow.com. If you want to hunt, that is your choice. I don't want to hunt, that is my choice. If you like to take and view the pictures of your "trophies" - the dead animals that you have killed, that is your choice. I don't want to see the pictures of your "trophies" - the dead animals that you have killed, that is my choice. Since NorthCountryNow.com is viewed by the public I don't feel it is appropriate to have these types of images displayed.

Please do not show me your pictures of dead animals. And, I am a native Northern New Yorker... lived here all my life. You should really think about what you are saying before lumping together everyone that disagrees with your point of view.

I agree with what others are saying; I was born and raised here, and I'm sure as hell not a vegetarian. However, I am an animal lover and do not wish to see gory pictures of an animal someone else has killed. I'm not arguing with your right to hunt; I'm simply arguing being forced to see it. A paper, local or not, needs to take into consideration the thoughts and feelings of its loyal readers.

A tough one for sure, I know many proud hunters and for them it is a sport. However, it truly is revolting for others. Why not have a link for hunters to click on if they wish to view the photos? That would keep everyone happy.

I have been a resident of northern new york my entire life. I grew up watching my father and older brother hunt and when I reached the appropriate age, joined them (though eventually deciding on my own to stop). It is not the aspect of the hunt that bothers me about this article but rather the tasteless manner in which it was chosen to be portrayed and I am disturbed even further to see the ravenous defense of such gore and viscera as some sort of "cultural right". This same type of dangerous mindset can be found amongst such groups as Neo-Nazis and radical Muslims who use the practices of the past as an excuse for their actions in the present.

I'm sorry but all this article and its subsequent comments (mainly the ones in favor) serve to do is highlight and perpetuate the negative stereotypes associated with the North Country and and I find it greatly harrowing to see so many people proudly, stubbornly and often times arbitrarily defending them.

I don't personally hunt, but most people I know do. It is a sport and a large one in the north country. I think its fine to post pictures even if I don't like them, at least my boyfriend does! Don't we already have enough censorship and lack of freedom? Come on people.

Anonymous said...

Its not like he shot it and left it on the side of the road...and its not like it got hit by a car and someone took a picture of it......hunting is a sport........I bet some of you would think differently about this if you didn't have any hot pockets or tater tots in your freezer to eat.........I say Good Hunting, Dude!!!

Anonymous said...

I think posting pictures of dead animals is great! Keep up the good work. This bear, if that is what it really is, probably would kill you if it had a gun and a chance. I just wished someone would have killed that moose that was running loose the other day in Fort Jackson. Seeing him running free is disturbing.
Make no mistake our hunting ways are being threatened everday we don't kill something. Each day an animal is allowed out of the scope of my 30 odd 6 is a day we lose who we are. Now lets sing a song about that dead bear.

I was shocked to open the North Country Now website and find this disturbing picture - this poor defenseless animal hanging from the rafter. But what is worse is the use of fluorescent lighting - the bear looks all washed out - the childs face is overexposed. And the blood doesn't even look real. I don't know maybe it's my monitor but for Gods sakes - invest in a bounce light or at least adjust everything in Photoshop.

Wow! This is an interesting discussion. I actually felt a little uncomfortable with the picture, but agree that it's a little hypocritical to complain about it on behalf of children if you let your children watch violence and killing on TV. And if you don't, then you are probably screening what they do on the computer and could intercept something that might be disturbing to them. I also agree that taking kids out in the woods and learning about nature and spending time with them is a good thing. It isn't a black and white issue. I wish people would be a little kinder and consider that our differences in thinking and talents are what make us a strong community here in the North Country. Using stereotypes and name calling in comments is not very helpful. I am a "veggie" and some would probably call me an "elite" because as a teacher, I have a good job with good benefits, but I am not putting down hunters or the showing of the picture.

Anonymous said...

Give me a break, this is a rural area. Cows poop , game animals die. Go back to the city.

What I found most disturbing about this picture, and others that have been published on this site, are the children's photos. We all know that we are proud as parents of our childrens' many accomplishments. We, however, do not publish all of those accomplishments for public viewing. The saying "only in northern new york" holds true with these photos. These type of photos belong in hunting and fishing magazines. There, a parents pride with that particular hunting accomplishment would be appropiately placed.

Anonymous said...

I really don't want to look at a gutted animal myself. You should stick to pictures that everyone can enjoy!

Anonymous said...

Personally, I find the redneck killshots disgusting, however I would argue to the death for your right to publish them if you chose.

Anonymous said...

Trophy hunting never made any sense to me at all. Hunting as a way of providing however does make sense. The fact that this kill was purely for sport changes the nature of the photo to me, and I am sure many others. Also, the bloody aspects of the photo are or would be disturbing to anyone not involved in hunting.
My suggestion is to have a "sportsman link" on the page. That way those interested will be the only readers viewing the kill.

Alynia said...

Answer: No, I do not like having a cup of coffee, flipping on my computer, and seeing a dead bear hanging with his gut cut open. It was unsettling. However, every one has different tastes as I've read through in the comments. Yes - a sporting section would be grand and this could be the feature pic of that front section. No - I am not going to stop viewing NYCNow unless they show more dead animals pictures; not sure I could stomach even one a week. But that's me and NYCNow certainly doesn't need to care about one reader... right? As for those questioning the "proud daughter" and "what kind of parent" - COME ON!! This smiling girl seems very proud of her daddy and what he did and there's nothing illegal or wrong about the picture - it's just not in my interest or taste to see it first thing in the morning.

So... for those of you who wish the likes of me to "go away if you don't like ot" - rest assured I shall if more of these show up. But do I find them distrubing and cruel and wrong? Nope. Just not ny cup of morning coffee...

What a magnificent creature this bear use to be! If he is going to be eaten, and I hope he is, he should be thanked for giving his life for our table. If he was killed for trophy only, shame on you. To take the life of such wonderful creatures just for vanity seems to reflect an ignorance and lack of awareness of the sanctity and kinship we have with all life. In either case, I am not really interested in seeing the photos of dead animals with blood on the floor (or dead people from car wrecks as another example) just because it is part of north country living, particularly when they are such evolved animals such as bears. They seem to me to just be tasteless, especially when presented by the news with the with the word "proud". Will the bear be eaten?

Like many I live away now and stay in touch with the NC by way of this site NCN . I don't hunt anymore for many reasons . I do know where meat comes from and have cleaned many animals . I actually have passed up shots on bears several times as I don't care for the meat and wouldn't kill just for a bear rug . I don't think the guy had bad intentions and I remember vividly about the thrill of being successful . I also would like to note he used a bow which I preferred myself so kudos for that . One thing I learned over the years was how to take good pics of your successful hunt . I agree a nice pic of your kill layed out in it's natural setting with the bloody stuff not shown would have been a little more tasteful and I am sure this hunter will consider this next time he sends in a pic . If NCN is going to have these pics it's ok with me , but I do think they should be tastefully taken or have to click to see as I agree it isn't suitable for many . On a note that has to do more with the comments than the pic . The mentality of the hunters who had comments like the bloodier the better are the reason there is so much opposition in the first place . Road hunters , drinking , slobs , and trespassers are some of the reasons non hunters dislike you , and oh yes drive hunting . Actually I don't consider that hunting at all but many a hunter up north do . There is no catch and release for hunting , so for those who are iffy grab your camera instead , that's what I did .

If you are proud of your kill than that's fine but I don't feel the need to see it and I'm sure there are plenty of others that feel the same way. Thanks North Country Now for forcing me to go elsewhere to find the local news.

As a bow hunter, I am aware of just how much skill, and work, is involved in taking any animal with an arrow. Bow hunting requires one to be up close and personal about hunting. For many of us it is a spiritual experience. This hunter has every right to be proud of his harvest, and his work toward conservation.

After readg all of these comments, it is obvious that the North Country is diversified with an endless supply of opions. I wish these same folks were as "vocal" when it came to other topics of true value. Leave your personal attacks to your family & friends and blog only opions. This young man & his daughter did nothing illegal and were well within their rights to remind us we need to do what we can to "make it" in the North Country! Some need food stamps, welfare & other gov't subsidized benefits to "make it".. AT least this noble young man took it upon himself to do it right. Those worried about their children I assume review all media, home pages, TV, magazines, video games, etc. This in itself must be a full time job amd if were doing YOUR job, you would have been able to keep this photo out of sight of your sensitive children. Please focus on the issues that need blogs & opions and keep in mind your children have seen worse, done worse or will do worse. All of the concerned parents on this blog, run to your kids room remove any all "offensive" material, shut off your TV's, take away their cell phones, ipods, & video games, ride the bus so they don't hear a dirty word, put blinders on them at Walmart to keep them from the diversified customers & magazine covers displayed. It is this reason our children are rude, disrespectful and lazy these days. Stop shielding them from life. They will need all the hardening they can get to prepare them for their first job, no matter how entry level or elite it may be! Children that are hunting, fishing, trapping, working, schooling, etc. are not committing crimes. Where are your children?

I'd be interested to know if Mr. Dumers and his family have the meat of the bear in their freezer to keep them sustained during the harsh North Country winter... I understand people hunt animals, kill them and eat them, as Mr. Simser stated, but I highly doubt they ate or are planning to eat this bear. Hunting is a sport to some and it is brutal to others. I personally do not understand the sport in it but don't have a problem if people use what they've killed (food, pelts, etc.). I do not think photos like this should be on the front page of the Web site - a link to an album would probably me much better received - perhaps under a title of "Kill of the week!" Make it a hunting photo contest for each season. But have some sensitivity to those who enjoy the services your Web site provides but do not find these kill-shots appealing. Thank you.

I love to hunt and go hunting with my husband, however, I have to agree with the picture not appropriate. Sometimes there are pics of the head of a deer, etc. There are tasteful ways to do everything. An open, gutted bear with a little girl next to it I feel is distasteful for the public. It is part of life, but sometimes there are better ways to display things. A child logging into that page in the morning, may be taken back and really be upset by that. I agree, please keep those types of pictures to put in the side news area with a picture so that you dont see it unless you are interested in reading the article

The issue here is that some people find these photos offensive while others do not. Each side certainly has the right to their opinion. However, with most images, lyrics, videos, etc. that people may find offensive, they have the choice of whether or not to look or listen. When a picture like this is on the front page, readers do not really have a choice as to whether or not they see it. Unless, of course, NC Now wants all people who find this offensive to stop reading their paper all together. It is my opinion that these pictures should not be posted because some people do find them offensive, and therefore they should not have to see them if they don't want to. Hunters and fisherman can find another venue in which to post and view these "exciting and interesting" photos.

How do you think our ancestors ate food???? By magic? No they had to kill the animals to make food. You should grow up if you are more worried about this than other things.

Hunting in this area is a way of life. Get over it!

My children were raised oin hunting and fishing, in the recent years i started taking them hunting and i stand in my tree with my camera rather than my gun, as my personal choice (which dissapoints because we have no Venison to help through the winter, especially with the high heat bills. Hunting is like culling the herd, and population control, with out it there would have needless slaughter of these animals, such as that of the big farms in the county as part of crop pest control ( yes farmers need to protect their investment as well). Hunting when done in accordance to the law and seasons keeps the animal population controlled.

From what i have read in most comments does not revolve around the fact if the picture is appropriate but rather is hunting good or bad ? The fact is death is the circle of life, it supports our needs and shoudl be held in the highest respect. the picture is fine to post, i personally try to cover up the blood on the floor with speedy dry, more of a personal believe of repect for the fluid that maintains life, however this does not offend whne when not covered.

Nice picture, nice bear, hope the rug blanket - keeps your family warm, the bladder makes medicine that will help strenghten you in time of sickness and meat will keep fed and nourished through out the long winter - maybe even freeing up some extra cash saved on the grocery bill so you can buy the little one an extra christmas present, and finally the claws and teeth become jewelry for your loved ones to proudly wear as a symbol of honor and respect the black bear hold in our Adirondacks!!

I think it is very disturbing and revolting to open up the news and see a man with a young child standing next to a dead animal that has guts and blood everywhere. I don’t think that you should be able to put that on the computer, if it was dead and did not have guts everywhere fine but the guts shouldn't have been exposed in the picture. If you want to show off your dead animal get friends and a hunting camp and go there to show it off, not everyone wants to see a dead gutted animal.

First, like some previous posters I know this family.

Second, yes they are going to use all of the meat. It's already in the freezer.

No I don't know what they are doing with the hide but knowing Joey, he's got a plan for it.

Third, I am a liberal and I'm fine with hunting. It's a reasonable and economical way to control an over grown animal population. Would you rather find that bear half starved at your back door cause he can't find enough to eat in the wild? I know I don't want to open my door to find one there.

I'm sorry for those of you who didn't "like" the picture and on some level I can even agree that maybe their should be a separate NCNow album for hunting shots but that is no reason to question someone's ability to parent a child. The little girl pictured is bright, healthy, and well cared for, she's not suffering from some horrible abuse by knowing where her food comes from.

Have you noticed that most of the posts that object to the posting of this picture are polite and relatively objective, while many of the posts that are in favor of these types of photos are rather rude in nature, talking about "tree huggers" and "go back to the city" and "you are the reason our country is failing". I personally don't find it to be a coincidence that those who are in favor of displaying these images write posts that are rude, narrow-minded, and full of spelling and grammatical errors. It speaks volumes about the people who are posting these.

I personally do not wish to look at these images, but I do agree that others who enjoy them should have a right to look. I believe some posts above suggested posting them in a link rather than as the photo on the homepage. I think that's a great idea... that way those who want to look can, and those who don't won't have to accidently see something they don't wish to when they open the page.

Laura - I appreciate your comment. Just as a side note, I'm not a hippie nor do I consider myself a liberal. I grew up in the Town (not village) of Canton and was born in the North Country. I don't care if people hunt, most who do enjoy it very much - I just don't understand it, which is not of importance, as someone already pointed out, in this debate. The debate is the photo, it's a bit much for some and obviously not quite enough for others. I learned a lesson here though, you don't get very far posting comments on a North Country blog... I don't believe it's set-up to be an assassination of character but a sharing of opinions - some folks should ease up on viciousness.

Creating a hyper link so that the picture's can still be up-loaded to the website, i think is the greatest ideal of all. I am not a hunter never have been, never will be. My boyfriend and his family are all hunter's. And for me I won't turn down a good venison stew or venison Jerkey. So maybe I am a hypocrite. I'd rather not see the picture's of these dead hanging animal's with bloody bellies. I don't judge any one for how they go about feeding their families.

I think a lot of the background story on this guy was left out when the photo was posted because I don't think any one at NCN could have expected such a big controversy over one photo. Is this guy in fact going to feed his family for the winter from the bear? Maybe his little girl, need's a coat for winter and the bear's fur is going to help?

So many people on here want to jump to the negative side of thing's and put this guy down for shooting a bear. ( I did too think it was illegal for killing bear's ) I don't know a lot about hunting, but i am in no way putting this guy down for what he did. So many people on here say "get over it, it's life in the north country" you all are very right, this is part of life in the north country but there are a lot of people in the north country who don't enjoy this sport and would rather not see the picture's of the kill.

What is the difference, you see a dead bear when you open up NCN or you see a dead deer hanging in the hunter's front yard? What do your little one's say then? Are you all going to write to congress, or the president and say there should be a law against hanging dead deer's in front yard's, because little kid's can see them and they are disgusting or revolting, think long and hard it's the same thing.

As i said i don't like the sport of hunting and i think the photo's should be some where where they are still viewable by the one's who want to see them, but not viewable to the one's who are disgusted by it. If this guy did everything to code, and didn't break any law's and plan's and feeding and supporting his family with his kill, then let him be. He is doing probably what he love's and at least he isn't standing in line in Canton asking for Food Stamp's.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day - teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Who said that and was he not considered to be a wise man? I believe the same can be applied in regards to hunting. That being said, to those who find it offensive - one thing move on. The Bush administration banned the media from showing pictures of fallen soldiers caskets retuning to this country because they feared the public outcry would dampen their war effort. This appears to be the same kind of censorship mentality in a way. Let the man put meat on his table. At a time when the job market is so wonderful and the economy so robust, let us not criticize the capabilities and resoursefulness of an individual who can and does take advantage of his ability to provide for himself and family. As for the picture, I see nothing wrong with it as long as no one in his household does not object to it. Would you rather see pictures of someone's vehicle after an animal collision or better yet the individuals in that vehicle prior to rescue personel arriving. If anything this picture has opened a dialogue, be it positive or negative. Go listen to Don Henley of the Eagles song "Get Over It".

What I find disturbing is the child in the photo, with a dead animal. I can never understand why a parent would want their child photographed in this way.

I’m not going to fly into a pointless debate about whether hunting is right or wrong; everyone is entitled to their feelings and opinions. However, this photo is absolutely disgusting. While I myself am opposed to hunting, the reason I disagree with the posting of this picture is because it's inappropriate for the homepage of this website. People who get their news everyday in this area should not be subjected to this type of image being burned into their minds. It’s interesting that almost every person who responds positively to this photo claims that the only people offended are "hippies", "treehuggers", vegetarians, people from NYC, etc. I'm from a rural area, and have lived next to a farm almost my entire life. I eat meat. I believe that killing an animal in self-defense is fine. But this photographic proof of flagrant killing for sport is appalling. Just as I would find it distasteful for pro-life groups to post photos of dead fetuses, or news agencies to post photos from graphic crime scenes, hunters should not be able to post photos of their kills on the homepage of one of the only news websites in this area. There is a reason that North Country Now has a section for blogs. If you want us to know that you killed an animal, write about it instead. And no, I don't have a problem signing my name to this opinion.

I was so incredibly disturbed by your photo of the dead bear. I had my daughter on my lap when I opened my computer to your homepage and luckily was able to switch pages at the last second before she noticed. I will not visit NCNow in the future unless a pledge is made against posting images of dead animals.

I am horrified that the publishers of the webpage didn't immediately remove the image when people began to react. I also think it's atrocious that the image was posted a second time in this article.

I think that people make too much of a stink about things now a days. In that case we shouldn't be posting pictures of fish and deer either. Seriously c'mon people we are from the north country not HOLLYWOOD!! If you want your children to be sheltered and pampered and brought up with the mind set that everything can be bought at a store then move on out of here because we are in a poor part of the united states and things here are worked for. I have a 4 year old and she said wow mommy a bear! Not a huge deal I dont think. For others whose kids might have said something you should educate them, tell them stories of our ancestors. If you really wanted to make this topic so massive then maybe you should not only be looking at pictures of animals, but you should not be eating or wearing them either!! I can honestly say that I liked the fact that I got to see a picture of a bear from up here, it was the 1st pic I have seen of a bear from this area and I was pretty amazed that I saw it. I was a little shocked when I read that it only weighed 148 lbs because I thought that bears were alot more but then again thats all part of the educational experience. ************and for those of you who are threatening to never look at this website again until there is a pledge ...Please, give us a break! There are plenty of people that will keep coming to the website because it is informative, educational, and keeps us all in touch with our community so get over yourselves and if you can't than the northcountry isn't were you belong, you belong in a place called never never land! ~ Kari

The photo is fine. Anyone who is worried about some traumatic experience to a child for seeing the photo has real issues.
Raise your own child. You be the parent. Like TV, radio or any media outlet, look/listen BEFORE you expose your child. Got it? Just like crossing a road.
Any adult who cannot deal with the photo should not have access to a computer and the internet, or TV. Children are the responsibility of parents. Anyone upset with the photo is someone just looking for a fight...

Disgusting, hunters are morons. I'm surrounded by them at work and they sound like drooling neanderthals. There should be a season for hunting hunters... I wonder how macho they would then?

I never realized how many people were in favor of censorship. Only certain types of photos are ok? Surprised ,disappointed and just a little frightened that we as a people are headed in that direction.

The folks who did not like the picture of the fine young man who shot a bear (and he'll feed his family with the meat) with his proud little daughter must not eat meat or fish. Probably don't use leather products of any kind or go to horse races. Of course that stuff they buy at the supermarket wrapped in plastic was never a big brown-eyed cow, or a cute little fluffy chick, or a fine, swift sea-going fish. If it's wrapped in plastic you don't have to look it in they eye and pull the trigger!

How very convenient and rightous it is.

Frankly, I'm glad to see that fine young man with his bear. He's part of who we are in the North Country and if you don't like us, do us a big favor and leave!

Amazing what the past 100 years have brought (or should I say forgot). A photo brings up this much of a stir, but the same critics are probably the same ones who break all the rules. How many of you critics have been totaly rude ? I would bet you are the same people who walk into the street in front of an oncoming vehicle and make it stop, tailgater, run stop lights, etc.. You want the world tailered to just your needs and ideas, and screw the rest (am I right ?) We live in a FREE country! To those of you who find the picture revolting, well, I am sure I would find YOUR behavior revolting also. This Man did nothing wrong or illegal, nor did North Country Now. I challenge the critics of this picture to look in the mirror and clean up their own acts !

So killing an animal is considered a sport?? Do you get satisfaction out of taking a life? Did this guy really kill the bear to eat or just to boost his ego?

I was born and raised in the North Country and I still find this photo offensive. Does this mean I should leave my family and up and move to California (as someone above suggested) just because I'm not a hunter or a fisherman?

defrisselle said...

This is the North Country during hunting seasons. This is what some do. I don't hunt, but my father did. Maybe that is the issue. The loss of a hunting tradition in a family. I guess that is why some are opposed to the picture. They don't or never did have anyone in their memory in the family that hunted. So, they see it in the same line at animal cruelty to pets or livestock.
Sure, hunting is a sport. It is also a source of food. A means of population control. Don't complain about hunting and vehicular wildlife accidents. We'd have alot more without hunting.
I'm sure none of this bear will go to waste.
Yes, nature and the fauna are nice to look at. They are also tasty!

hunters arent "proud of slaughtering"...ive grown up with it my whole life and the people in my family are just as happy if they dont get something as when they do. Its a time honored tradition, we've become disturbed by the simple facts of life...any one have any idea what the slaugter houses look like for all that packaged "meat" you people buy at the store look like? They are swimming in blood and parts so people dont have to be "offended" and can sit around and keep their hands clean. Wild game is 100 times healthier for you, its leaner and they arent eating the garbage that gets feed to these animals they go to the grocery stores. Most people that I know that hunt dont buy store bought meat because they want their families to eat better, healthier food. Hunting is a great way for families to spend time together and to get the kids out from in front of the tv and the video games and see and experience and enjoy nature. these photos dont show us anything we arent seeing on the sides of the roads, and no one asks if we are "offended" by all the road kill...if we have to look at pictures of sunsets and kids and all other sorts of things, then the hunters deserve to have a few of their pictures up as well, its only fair.

The ignorance of the person who wrote "there ought to be a season to hunt hunters" amazed me the most!

I am an animal lover, but I also understand the need for hunting etc, the picture shown was just in bad taste. Showing the blood dripping, etc. can be very disturbing to some people, I know I was disturbed by it. I don't mind seeing pictures of animals that are hunted but do we really need to see the bloody mess as well?

It's the north country people... People up here like to hunt. It's not that big of a deal. I don't understand why people are making it out to be a big deal. Alot of people in the north country like to hunt and everyone knows that, And I don't see a problem with posting pictures of animals that are killed during hunting season.

Congratulations to this man and his daughter on his harvest. For those of you who have problems with this photo, I agree with the majority of other posts, go back to liberal NYC where you belong! Never heard any complaining of the bloody photo of Klages, but the tree huggers out there can complain about a bear being "killed for sport" How do you know this man isnt feeding his family this winter? This is the same type of liberal bureaucracy that we are battling in the White House.

Interesting list of comments on this subject!
I tend to side with , Bob Merrifield, Big Boox, and especially jboulais on this subject.
I listened to a variety of the comments but I have a different take on the subject.
Instead of Hippies, Rednecks, Upstate vs Downstate, I think the views and expressions are more accurately portrayed across gender lines.
With the copious amounts of "anonymous's" included, there is no way to accurately tell, but I believe the OBJECTION to the photo is LARGELY along gender lines.
Woman I feel, if one could analyze, are the largest contributor to the OBJECTIONEE'S. Now before a whole bunch of girls respond in support, I'm not saying ALL girls object.I'm just saying if it were analyzed, which it won't be, the girls objections outnumber the guys, but without clarification along Gender lines, the resulting conclusion is expressed in GENERAL PUBLIC opinion status. This is misleading, and I would like to see even more of the anonomous's list their gender "at least". The old saying, "squeaky wheel gets the grease" is still appropriate today. Therefore guys, if you want to be heard, you better get into the "frey"!!!
